Fiqh & Usul

The Department of Fiqh and Usul, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya (APIUM),  established in 1996, offers an in-depth study into various aspects of an increasingly growing shariah knowledge.  The department has   two specializations, namely Fiqh and Usul and Falak (Islamic astronomy). The programmes offered by the department cover both undergraduate and postgraduate levels which aim to produce  excellent graduates in the field of Fiqh and Usul. This program is relevant for the long term as it is a core in the discipline of Islamic studies.

Besides holding an important component in the Islamic scholarly tradition, the department has the potential to evolve in a modern scientific and competitive education system. This department produces graduates who are versatile and have an opportunity to pursue careers in many fields such as Islamic religious affairs, halal, Islamic banking and takaful, Islamic law, Hajj and umrah, consultation, editing, motivation, and other Islamic affairs. Along with the specialization in astronomy, graduates can pursue careers in the field such as astronomers in the Mufti Departments, officers and researchers at the Observatories, analyst officers, entrepreneurs, and many more.

The department offers 1 undergraduate programme and 4 postgraduate programmes:

•           Bachelor of Shariah

•           Master of Shariah (Contemporary Studies) [Mixed Mode]

•           Master of Shariah [Research]

•           Master of Islamic Studies [Research]

•           Doctor of Philosophy [Research]

The undergraduate curriculum exposes all shariah areas to the students in the first two years and then allows the students to shape their curricula during the last one and half years by choosing courses from a wide portfolio of electives, thereby creating their unique expertise in their preferred shariah area (Fiqh and Usul). Meanwhile, our postgraduate programme links a variety of fiqh disciplines in halal, muamalat, family law, Islamic law, Islamic astronomy, Islamic worship, Islamic wealth management, and Islamic jurisprudence. This programme focuses on specialized areas where our department has a broad range of academic expertise that will add value to the learning experience of each postgraduate candidate. Moreover, postgraduate students will also be able to gain and develop valuable research skills in their respective fields.
