DEPARTMENT OF SHARIAH, ECONOMICS AND GOVERNANCE
The Department of Shariah, Economics and Governance is a newly established department under the umbrella of Shariah Program at the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya. This department is the result of the integration of two long-established departments, namely the Department of Siasah Syar'iyyah (Islamic Political Science) and the Department of Shariah and Economics, both found in 1996 with the establishment of Academy of Islamic Studies. The new department continues the legacy of its predecessors by offering bachelor and postgraduate degrees in Shariah with a specialization in economics, governance, and Islamic Political Science. Its primary aim to provide high-quality scholars capable of applying Shariah-based solutions to contemporary issues in politics, governance, and economic throught integrated teaching and learning. The department’s mission is to produce impactful research and publications in the area of Shariah, Islamic economics and governance that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and community development at both national and international levels. Research conducted by the department is broad-ranging and interdisciplinary, encompassing Islamic Politics, Governance, Islamic Management, Shariah based quality Management, islamic Political Thought, Leadership in Islam, Human Rights in Islam, International Islamic Relations, Malaysian politics, shariah and economics, zakah, waqf, Islamic banking, Islamic insurance (takaful), and the Islamic Capital market. The department have strong networks and collaborations with government institutions and industry including JAKIM, YADIM, INTAN, Islamic banking institutions, takaful operators, zakah and waqf institutions. Students gain industry exposure through industrial training, community engagement, and guest lecturer experts. Many graduates at both bachelor and postgraduate level have established successful careers in administrative, management, economics, and academic sector across the globe. The departments is proud of its diverse alumni network, with graduate originating from Malaysia as well as from Jordan, Libya, Algeria, Palestine, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore.
