The Department of Shariah and Economics in the Academy of Islamic Studies of Universiti Malaya was officially established in 1996. The department offers bachelor and postgraduate degrees in shariah with a specialization in economics. This is in line with our aim to provide high-quality scholars who can apply shariah solutions to economic issues through integrated teaching and learning in the theory of shariah and economics. Industry exposure is gained through industrial training and industry guest lecturers. Our mission is to produce high-quality research and publications in Islamic economics that enhance knowledge and community development at both national and international levels. Our research is broad-ranging and far-reaching; it includes shariah and economics, and Islamic economics development, with a focus on zakah, waqf, Islamic banking, Islamic insurance (takaful), the Islamic capital market, and the Malaysian economy. We have strong networks and linkages with industry and government institutions, including Islamic banking institutions, takaful operators, zakah institutions and waqf institutions in Malaysia. Many of our graduates at the bachelor and postgraduate levels have gone on to work in Islamic economics sector or teach Islamic economics and finance all over the world. Our alumni are from Jordan, Libya, Algeria, Palestine, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore, as well as from Malaysia.
