INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Islamic Education Programme is one of the departments under the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya. The Programme provides expertise in Islamic Education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Since 1982, the Programme has offered a Bachelor of Islamic Education which is a joint program between the Academy of Islamic Studies, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Education. Currently, there are two (2) programs for undergraduate level namely Bachelor of Islamic Education (Islamic Studies) and Bachelor of Islamic Education (Al-Quran Studies), both of which are joint programs between the Academy of Islamic Studies and the Faculty of Education. Graduates of this Programme have had no trouble to find employment, even though it is no longer guaranteed that they will become Islamic Education Teacher. Nearly all graduates who passed the Ministry of Education of Malaysia’s interview were successfully placed as Islamic Education teachers in Malaysian public schools. Since they underwent their practicum, they have demonstrated confidence in their abilities. They receive attention from the schools, and eventually some are invited to teach at the schools after completing the practicum. They are assigned to teach not only Islamic Education but also Arabic Language and other subjects. This is due to the confidence in their abilities, and students who enter this Programme are the selected students (cream of the cream) as they must pass the Malaysian Educators Selection Inventory (MEdSI) test as well as the university’s interview. For postgraduate level, this Programme offers various fields of research related to Islamic Education. There are currently seven (7) lecturers and four (4) language teachers in the Programme who have a vast experience in supervising local and international postgraduate students. They managed to supervise the postgraduate students under the Master of Islamic Studies program and the Doctor of Philosophy program, both of which are programs by fully research. In a few years, a new Master program by fully coursework namely Master of Islamic Educational Research is proposed to be offered. All the academic staff at this Programme have managed themselves to publish various publications whether at the local or international levels. For disseminating and impacting the research outputs related to Islamic Education, this Programme manages the Journal of Islamic Educational Research (JIER), an online journal since 2016, which is currently indexed in MyJurnal under Citation and Infometrics Center, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
