This is a pure research programme and there are no course modules for this programme. Candidates are required to attend and pass Research Methodology course within the first two semesters of candidature and all the graduation requirements before being conferred the Degree. The medium of thesis is in Malay or English, but under special circumstances, the Senate may approve the use of a language other than Bahasa Malaysia or English for the thesis concerned.
The candidates will carry out focused research in their area of specialization, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. They will be alert to the challenges faced in the international arena through the seminars, conferences and many more.

The programme offers its students a chance to explore the many facets of the Islamic Shariah by fusing it with a broad spectrum of other subjects such as Law, Economics, Management, Politics and even Astronomy. The dynamic and fast paced developing world calls for the need of more and more Islamic scholars. Needless to say, this programme is UM’s in response to that particular need. All-encompassing and in-depth, the programme offers a detailed look on the Islamic principles and thinking in order to produce analytical graduates who will undoubtedly heed the call for their religion and their nation.
This PhD programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted PhD status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty. PhD candidates’ theses must not exceed 100,000 words. They are required to complete their studies within 12 semesters.
