INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT OF AQIDAH AND ISLAMIC THOUGHT
The Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thought, Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya was established in 1996 as one of the nine departments within the Academy of Islamic Studies. The department offers a Bachelor of Usuluddin (Aqidah and Islamic Thought) degree, a Master of Usuluddin (research mode) degree, a Bachelor of Usuluddin (Aqidah and Islamic Thought) degree (mixed mode), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. From 2002/2003 to 2006/2007, the department also offered a Bachelor of Usuluddin (Biology Sciences) degree and a Bachelor of Usuluddin (Physics) degree in collaboration with the Faculty of Science at the University of Malaya. Currently, the department offers:
i. Bachelor of Usuluddin - with a specialization in Islamic Thought and Spiritual Studies.
ii. Master of Usuluddin (Islamic Thought and Civilization) degree (mixed mode) - with a specialization in Aqidah and Islamic Thought.
iii. Master of Usuluddin (research mode)
iv. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thought aims to be a distinguished center for education and research in Islamic Studies, functioning as a catalyst for knowledge in teaching, learning, and higher education in the field of Aqidah and Islamic Thought in Malaysia. The department strives to provide facilities for teaching and learning, research, and publication in the field of Aqidah and Islamic Thought. Its objective is to produce scholars and graduates who possess strong faith, rational thinking, philosophical depth, broad perspectives, excellent character, and a tolerant outlook, in line with the goal of nurturing righteous individuals. The department focuses its expertise and research in five main areas:
i. Aqidah (Islamic Creed).
ii. Tasawwuf (Sufism) and Islamic Psychospirituality.
iii.Islamic Philosophy.
iv. Islamic Thought
v. Comparative Religion.
