INTRODUCTION OF APPLIED SCIENCE WITH ISLAMIC STUDIES
Since the last few decades, the growth of interest in integrating Islamic studies with modern sciences have come to a significant phase in Malaysian educational system. In this respect, the leading institutions of Islamic higher education in Malaysia i.e., Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya (APIUM) has taken the noble step of establishing Applied Science With Islamic Studies Programme (SGPI) in 2002 to offer foundation programme, under graduate programmes and postgraduate programme based on Islam and Science. Currently, for the foundation programme called Asasi Pengajian Islam dan Sains (APIdS), it has offered two streams; Life Sciences and Physical Science. For the first-degree programmes, Bachelor Degree of Islamic Studies and Science (SMPIS) offers majoring in Islamic Studies and one of four majoring in sciences, i.e., Biology, Applied Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physics. Another degree programme is Bachelor of Islamic Studies and Information Technology (SMPITM). To offer these programmes, SGPI has collaborative work with the Centre for Foundation Studies in Science, UM (PASUM), Faculty of Science, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM), and Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FBL). At postgraduate level, we have offered a full-research mode for Master’s Degree in Islamic Studies and Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Studies. We have four academic staffs who are experts in Islam and Science research fields such as Islamic Bioethics, Islam and Environment, History of Islamic Science, Agricultural Science and so forth. In short, SGPI has produced graduates who have strong foundation in Islamic Studies as well as ability to conduct research in laboratory, field work, and Halal industrial based endeavors.
