Degrees Offered
The Academy of Islamic Studies offers higher degree programs as follows:
- Master in Syariah
- Master in Usuluddin
- Master in Islamic Studies
- PhD

Modes of Studies
All programs are by research except for masters in Syariah and Usuluddin where candidate may choose to read by coursework and dissertation. Fresh graduates are highly recommended to select programs with coursework and dissertation. Candidate works under supervisor(s) to write a dissertation or thesis. |

Durations of Studies |
| |
For master degree candidate can submit their dissertation for examination after two semesters (a year). Master degree by coursework can only submit their dissertation after passing all the required courses. A normal period for coursework is two semesters. A candidate has to register up to six courses. The maximum period is for five years or ten semesters both for full research and coursework master degree students.
For PhD degree a minimum of two years or four semesters is required before a candidate can submit the thesis for examination. The maximum period is 8 years or 16 semesters. |

(3) Islamic Studies
This program is designed specifically to candidates without Islamic studies background. Areas of research under this program include the above and mainly on comparative basis of candidate area of knowledge through academic qualification or work experience. Some of special areas of research under this program include:
- Islamic Education
- Islam and Science
- Islam and Social Studies

Entry Requirments
| |
(1) Masters in Syariah and Usuluddin
Good bachelor degree in Syariah and Usuluddin with minimum CGPA of 3.0 or second class honours from recognized universities. Bachelor in general Islamic studies or other certificates with Islamic majors can be considered as equivalent to Syariah and Usuluddin bachelor degrees. |

(2) Masters in Islamic Studies
Good bachelor degree in any field of studies with minimum CGPA of 3.0 or second class honours from recognized universities. |

(3) PhD
Master degree from recognized universities. Holder of Bachelor degrees from University of Malaya with CGPA of 3.75 and above can register for PhD. |

Special Requirements
For non-Malaysian citizen wishing to write their dissertation or thesis in English and whose degrees from Universities that English is not the medium of instruction, candidate must prove proficiency in English by obtaining band 6 in IELTS or TOEFL score of 550.
All candidates must attend research methodology course in the first year of their registration.

Dissertation Language
Candidate can choose to write either in Bahasa Malaysia or English. If candidate wishes to write in Arabic, a special permission is required from the University’s Senate. Candidate has to explain why he or she needs to write in Arabic. |

Application Procedures

Application for registration can be made online. All research students must also submit a proposal of their research topic which comprises background, objectives, methodology, literature review and brief bibliography. All necessary information can be obtained through online. Candidate need not to meet or discuss with a particular supervisor at the Academy. Financial Assistance and Scholarships
The University of Malaya provides some financial assistance to both local and overseas students. Research student can apply research grant. Some scholarship is also offered to post graduate students All information on these matters can be obtained online. |
