Department of Al-Quran & Al-Hadith

Background

The Department of Al-Quran and Al-Hadith (DQH) is a Usuluddin studies oriented department in the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya.  This department was formed on 15 January 1996, as a result of the restructuring exercise between the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Academy of Islam.  Prior to this restructuring, both departments were separate University of Malaya components.  From the merging of these two instruments, the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya was born.

The DQH was established in tandem with the establishment of other departments at the Usuluddin Studies Division.  These departments are the Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thoughts, Department of Missionary and Spiritual Development, and the Department of al-Quran and al-Hadith.  Its objective is to ensure that courses offered and taught will be easier for students to cerap and master, whilst producing religious scholars who are experts in their areas of specialization. The Department courses began to be offered for the 1996/1997 Academic session to its pioneer group of 53 students.

The management of the DQH is headed by one Head of Department.  Up until today, this position has been filled by four reputable academicians.  The first Head of Department was Associate Professor Dr Abdul Hayei Abdul Sukor (1996/1997 – 1997/1998).

In line with the situational changes and current scenarios, the DQH, apart from working towards improving its quality, is also continuously taking initiatives to generate students of exemplary quality in line with today’s demands and challenges.  This is done by interweaving both classical and contemporary knowledge for the purpose of producing graduates who have the ability to progress further and compete positively.  Equipped with a cornucopia of knowledge which has at its core guidance and insights from al-Quran and al-Hadith,  it is hoped that these graduates will become ambassadors who will strife beyond boundaries and limitation of time and place to maintain Islam’s superiority and excellence.
