Department of Islamic History and Civilization

Background

The Department of Islamic History and Civilization (DIHC) is a Usuluddin studies oriented department in the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya.  This department was formed on 15 January 1996, as a result of the restructuring exercise between the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Academy of Islam.  Prior to this restructuring, both departments were separate University of Malaya components.  From the merging of these two instruments, the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya was born.

DIHC was established in tandem with the establishment of other departments at the Usuluddin Studies Division.  These departments are the Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thoughts, Department of Missionary and Spiritual Development, and the Department of al-Quran and al-Hadith.  Its objective is to ensure that courses offered and taught will be easier for students to master, whilst producing religious scholars who are experts in their areas of specialization. The management of DIHC is headed by one Head of Department.  Up until today, this position has been filled by academicians.  The first Head of Department was Professor Dr Abdul Halim bin Haji Mat Diah ( 1996/1997) until 2003/2004 .

The Bachelors in Usuluddin (Islamic History and Civilization) programme is carried out internally.  Currently, there is no joint administration with other institutions of this programme.  As a result of that, matters relating to the curriculum, assessment system, credit transfers and quality control are all subject to the policy and rules of the University of Malaya.

In line with current situational changes and trends, DIHC, besides making efforts to improve quality, is also continuingly taking initiatives to generate students of exemplary quality in line with today’s demands and challenges.  This is done by interweaving both classical and contemporary knowledge for the purpose of producing graduates who have the ability to progress further and compete positively.  Equipped with a cornucopia of knowledge that is based on the teachings of Islamic turath and up to date knowledge, it is hoped that these graduates will develop into the key movers who will strife beyond boundaries and limitation of time and place to fight for Islam’s superiority and excellence
